Essay 3 - Gaining Emploment

The jobs in the creative media sector are not always easy to get, whether it being in film, graphics or photography, if you’re the average person you will not stand a chance, you will require qualifications in specific fields. The field I will talk about is Graphics.

In the Graphic industry you have many jobs available, from supervising and physically conducting printing jobs to being a graphic designer. To get anywhere into this sector you will require to have some sort of experience into the type of field/job you are trying to go into, the job I will discuss in becoming a graphic designer. To become a graphic designer you mainly need to show that you are enthusiastic and passionate about what you wanting to do, to do this over your educational years you will have to create a portfolio, this will show your employer that you are capable of create good, artistic pieces of work. However this will not get you the job to create a solid portfolio you will need qualifications, the qualifications require for a graphic designer is a degree in graphic design and to get into this you will need to have done art/graphic in college or in any other educational establishment. Your best chance of getting a career in the exact field that you desire a job in would be to stay on to complete a placement year, this is learning as you experience life in a work environment, after you have completed this placement year you will stand a better chance of being taken on by the firm than any other competitor trying to seek employment with that company.

You will require loads of experience so you should defiantly think about taking part in unpaid work for a firm to gain extra experience, as this will be worth its weight in gold on your c.v.  The pay for a graphic designer is £14000 - £25000 yearly. The pay for a senior designer can earn up to £45000 yearly. Obviously you will have to work as a graphic designer to become a senior however taking the pay into consideration it will be worth it. To stand a better chance against competitors you need to litter your c.v on as many job websites as possible, this will not guarantee you a job in the exact position you are seeking for however it will email you with also related jobs in the graphic industry.

By researching into how to gain employment in the graphics field with in the creative arts sector I have concluded that it is possible to gain employment in graphics, even though it is hard to seek employment in general, by taking the right steps and taking the correct paths you should stand a better chance over any other applicants.

Essay 2 - Job Roles

There are many job roles in the photography sector from a receptionist to actually conducting the shoots, today I will look into the types of jobs available and how jobs increase or decrease the larger the establishment, I will look into regional, national and international companies.

The establishment that I have researched into is Jackie Stubbs Photography, this establishment has been around since 1987, with just a small base in the heart of Burton upon Trent Jackie the owner works for her self, she shoots, edits, prints and starts and completes the full process in her small shop. Jackie doesn’t have many jobs to offer however working for her self she takes on a large work load, she takes on the following job roles, Receptionist, Photographer, Editing, Printing and delivering. By completing all these tasks she saves money on wages however she doesn’t have enough work to employ people, however she does take on apprentices to give them a feel for life as being a photographer, this educates them all the necessary step taken before and after a shoot.  The disadvantage to a business like this is there are no jobs to offer people and if Jackie was to employ she would want someone qualified.

The next establishment in the photography industry tat I have researched into is Venture Photography; Ventures have many branches, Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, London and many more. With all these branches it offer a lot to the population of the UK in the sense of jobs, the main roles in Ventures is Receptionist. Photographer (edit shots, Setup shots), cleaner, security guard, and just general supervision jobs. With establishments like these there are hundreds of jobs seen as they are buy and turning over thousands of pounds on a weekly basis as they have shoots that range up to £4000. The way varies based up on the importance and the qualifications required for the job.

The final company that I have researched into is Rakin Photography; the name of the company is named after the owner of the company. John Rankin Waddell met a man called Jefferson Hack in college studying printing; he formed a working relationship with Rakin, as they both graduated they created a magazine called Dazed and Confused, followed by creating another on called Hunger. After completing these small project they both accelerated into business together working for them selves. The jobs that was available for a business such as Rankin was just a few people carrying their equipment, setting up shots. Photographer like Rankin have minimum jobs because their work is valued and work for people who pay good money for shoots.

The conclusion that I have made by researching into the different types of photography companies is that people who work for them selves and loads of photographer do so, have none or minim jobs to offer to people, however the bigger establishments that work in a more professional manner have loads of jobs.

Essay 1 - The Film and TV Industry Essay

There are many film and TV industries across the world, they all have filming facilities with in them, for this particular essay I will concentrate on regional, national and international companies.

The first company that is regional to us is based in the heart of Birmingham, Indefinite Wisdom is a company that offer many opportunities to people who want to get their ideas recognised to make them into the media and film industry. This particular company advertises for people to bring their concepts to them to get developed into possible films. Infinite Wisdom has many big investors backing them up financially, BBC, National Lottery, Screen wm. With big investor such as these you know the company will not have budgeting issues when developing your idea. This type of company fits into the media sector as a whole because it allows anyone with a solid concept to try and make it into the industry by being financially backed up by a company like this.

Next the other company that I have researched on is ITV, this national company has been around since 1995, it has many programmes that catch the eyes of the UK’s population instantly, The Bill; Britain’s got talent, Emmerdale. These recognised programmes have been screened on our TVs for many years, these ‘programmes also known as soaps have been financed by many investors, they are so successful that they have made it into the 5 channels that come standard on our TVs with out the audience having to get a television package through other companies. This type of company sits well with in the media and television sector as it just needs an audience because they don’t depend on the average person to keep them going financially, as long as hey are invested into by bigger parties they will still bring entertainment to our televisions.

The final company that I researched into was Sky; it is an international company that was formed in 1990, with over 11 million subscribers in the UK and Ireland it is a very successful company. It also has many other services as well as just providing hundreds of TV channels to people, Internet, Landline and many interactive services. Sky has many packages ranging from £10 all the way to up to £79. This company has many offices across the country with many branches offering the population thousands of jobs. This company sit well in the TV and film industry, as it is the one, which provides us with many hours of entertainment, and with out companies like this we wouldn’t be able to watch subscribed channels.
After completing this essay I have came up with many conclusions, the smaller the company (regional) it is easier for the average person to pursue and develop a concept with the financial backing required. This is because with the bigger companies in the industry only deal with the bigger parties in the industry. My final conclusion is that the larger the company in the TV industry the more jobs available for the average person.
